Healthy Turkey Chili Recipe


This year in Colorado, it snowed on October 9th. You read that right. 9 days into October (a clearly “fall” month), winter jumped the gun and showed its face. The only thing that has made it bearable is this chili. It is delicious, the right amount of spicy, and perfect for a night in watching football.

I have tried somewhere between five and seven different chili recipes from Pinterest. Here’s what I was looking for: turkey (rather than beef), vegetables incorporated, and the right amount of spice. Sure, I could have done some recipe testing and figured out the right recipe on my own- but, then Pinterest would go out of business. One of my previous favorites had zucchini in it, I had never had chili with zucchini in it and I liked it but it got too mushy in the slow cooker so that recipe was out.

Since winter decided to grace us with its presence, my quest for the perfect chili recipe started earlier this year. I loved this recipe but made a few changes: I decreased the chili powder, did not use corn, and added in black beans. Not major changes, just personal preference. As the name says, this really is the best healthy turkey chili recipe.

Bring it on winter- I will just make this chili every week!!


Turkey Chili
adapted from: Ambitious Kitchen’s recipe for The Best Healthy Turkey Chili

Serves: 5

1 pound ground turkey
1 yellow onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, pressed/minced
1 medium green pepper, chopped
2.5 tablespoons chili powder (3 tablespoons if you want it spicier)
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt (to taste)
1 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes (not drained)
1/2 cup chicken broth
1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed


  1. In a medium sized pan, cook the turkey and chopped onion until fully cooked.
  2. In your slow cooker, poor in the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Add in the turkey and onion and stir the ingredients together just a bit.
  4. Set the slow cooker to low and the timer to 3 hours and get ready for some delicious, comfy chili!!!
