If you’re like me, you read tons of articles that claim you can lose weight by doing X or changing Y. Some of them are great articles, but a lot of them aren’t actionable or they are super vague. Well, this is going to be about as simple as it gets. Want to lose 10 pounds or more? Here’s my tip:
Don’t buy or keep snacks and food that aren’t in line with your goals. That’s it.
Trying to lose weight or gain muscle? Don’t buy sugary drinks and snacks. Don’t buy food or snacks with lots of carbs like pasta, white bread, or crackers. Buy lots of protein, veggies, and fruit. Look for healthy versions of your favorite foods.
Why does this work? Because you eat the things that you buy. Let’s say you have a craving for ice cream or cookies. When you went to the grocery store this weekend, you bought both. Once you have that craving, it is a short walk to the fridge or to the pantry to stuff your face. If when you went to the grocery store this weekend, you bought neither. Once you have that craving, you have to (1) get in your car and drive to the store to buy those items, or (2) find something else in the house to eat. Likely, you will do that latter and if you only bought healthy foods and snacks at the store, you just beat your craving.
This strategy also works because you are exercising self-control at the grocery store surrounded by other people rather than at home when you are alone or with people who enable you. At the grocery store, you have to go and pick of the item you know you shouldn’t be eating and drive your cart around the store with that item in there knowing that everyone who walks by your cart sees that item in there. At the grocery store, embrace that people are watching and judging you. Use it as inspiration and as a self-check and put back the ice cream!! Believe me, it is a lot easier to put the ice cream back in the store with others watching than at home in your own kitchen when you are hungry.
Want to know the second key to this strategy? Throw out all your snacks and food that aren’t in line with your goals. Get rid of your chocolate Teddy Grahams, your ice cream, your cookies, and your crackers. Don’t just push them to the back of the shelf or save them for later. Throw it out- ALL of it. Start fresh.
This strategy allows for the occasional slip up. Make those slip ups when you are eating out at a restaurant. That way the slip up is one serving of ice cream rather than a whole gallon. After you have the ice cream at the restaurant, you go home and still don’t have any unhealthy foods in your home which means you can wake up the next morning and get back to it.
You’ll lose 10 pounds over a few months just by changing what you have in the house.
Try it. Get back to me. I’d love to hear your success stories!
